Mansfield residents are now beneficiaries of the mattress recycling law effective on May 1st of this year and Connecticut is the first state to implement a mattress recycling program!
Mattresses and box springs can now be recycled at the Mansfield transfer station free of charge.
This program will divert mattresses from the landfill into the hands of recyclers who can recycle the steel, wood, foam, and cotton. Mattresses cannot be frozen, twisted, wet, infested with bed bugs or soiled. The next time you purchase a mattress or box spring you will be surcharged a $9.00 recycling fee to fund this much needed program. It has been costly to the town and the consumer to get rid of mattresses and many times, due to the expense of disposal, they are left behind at residential properties, apartment rentals or public areas. (Please keep in mind that the program only supports mattresses and box springs, not futons, upholstered furniture, pull out sofas, or crib mattresses and similar items. )
And while you’re at the transfer station, you can also recycle your used vegetable oil. Please bring your oil in jugs or containers with covers. Your used oil will be converted to biodiesel fuel by Newport Biodiesel of Rhode Island.
The Town of Mansfield also has a great new tool on their website that directs you how and where to dispose of items. The “How to Dispose of Items” tool is easy to use. Just type in the name of the item you wish to dispose of and it will tell you how and where to get rid of it. By the way, I think the Town of Mansfield has one of the most proactive and efficient coordinators and recycling programs around. For more information about everything pertaining to recycling contact Mansfield’s Recycling Coordinator, Virginia Walton, 860-429-3333 or waltonvd@mansfieldct.org.
Where will you be Friday night, May 29th at 6pm?
There is a ribbon cutting and dedication of the newly completed Mansfield Town Square at Storrs Center. The ribbon cutting and dedication will be followed by a musical performance by Oh, Cassius, an indie folk-pop group from Bridgeport, Connecticut and winners of “Best Other” in the 2013 CT Music Awards. The event is free and parking is free for the first two hours in the parking garage. Bring a blanket, chair and an appetite, there are plenty of restaurants at Storrs Center to enjoy.
